Lima, Jan. 25 (ANDINA). ‘Quechua’, a Peruvian coffee grown in Puno valleys, won an international contest organized by Rainforest Alliance to identify the best tasting certified-organic, fair-trade coffee beans. This is the first time a Peruvian coffee has won such an award .The event took place in Long Beach, Florida, and the certification was issued by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), which is a civilian trade organization for the specialty coffees industry, consisting of American tasters as well as coffee professionals. Quechua coffee is one of the brands owned by Agrarian and Coffee Cooperatives from Sandia Valley (Cecovasa) located in Puno, which distributes Tunki coffee, awarded as the best special coffee in the world last year. Tunki coffee won the Best of Origin for Peru at the Specialty Coffee Association of America’s 2010 Roasters Guild Coffees of the Year Competition. Tunki has also won first prize in the Peruvian National Coffee Contest — twice. According to El Comercio daily, this is not the first time Nazario Mamani -Quechua coffee producer at Tupac Amaru Cooperative- participates in this contest. His coffee earned fifth place last year.
